Your painting of your mother not only captures her essence in the photo but builds on it. I feel the warmth of your love and admiration and your bond when I see your painted version. And thanks for sending little pieces of you out into the world to be well-loved and cared for— I have not been able to stop thinking about Exhausted or Exhilarated? since you first shared the image on Substack and so thrilled to steward her from here… here’s to your talent and inspiration, Janet!

Thank you, I’ll be thinking about your words for some time. And my goodness, thank you so much for being a collector. I hope you enjoy it for a very long time. It’s a piece that means a lot to me.

Your work really speaks to me. And the painting of your mother is deeply beautiful. You are achieving authenticity in your portrait work... I wish I was close enough to come see your paintings. I love the idea of the barbershop as an exhibition site: barbershops are where the real talk happens. When I was painting and exhibiting regularly my artist friends and I would trade pieces. That's one way to fill your home with art you love. These days I pour it all into sketchbooks, which I don't think I could part with. Sketchbooks are precious to me, a place where I create from the life I'm living. Keep going, you are doing such beautiful meaningful work.

Wow, Lisa, thank you for the encouragement and sentiments. Truly appreciated. I’m trying to get back to a sketchbook practice, sometimes the canvas steals too much time from me and I want to do more playing in the sketchbook.

It was interesting to read your sentiments on letting go of your original works, but they’re sure to be so appreciated and contribute to some wonderful spaces. The photo and painting of your mom are both stunning Janet!

Your paintings pull a story out of the viewer, a point where they can relate. The painting of your mom is a treasure. In your mom, I see my grandmother in a sleeveless dress, tending the little garden in our yard, giving us helpful tasks to teach us. So your memories prompted my memories.

These are beautiful(!) and each of your paintings seems to tell a story- I’ve never quite put storytelling with meaning quite so directly for myself until I read and saw your story-full, meaningful paintings:) (I mean yes stories have meaning generally, but hadn’t thought that it works the other way- that part of meaning, when I think of it, tends to be told by story.)

When I was writing this, the word storytelling kept popping up in my head but I pushed back on my thoughts on whether I was really telling a full story, fully participating in storytelling in my artworks. So I left out the word storytelling but you are right, it’s storytelling in its own form. Thank you for this.

I just finished Life at Full Speed by Jo of Reclaiming Creativity. She seems so excited and energetic about the start of fall. I see a lot of the same energy in your work. Simple shapes and bold colors make for attractive art in my mind. Great work!

The pleasure is mine. I grew up in a home with five children, two of whom are good artists. I’m (wink!) not one of them! ❤️!
