I highly highly recommend In Praise of Retreat which led me to Sarton and others. Your post led me to review my notes from In Praise of Retreat. There are many many on Solitude, silence, noticing etc. Note as the chapters progressed it was less compelling for me at least and at times the author disregards her privilege but I still found it worthwhile and it aligns well with your project.
