Beautiful reflections on beautiful works. I cannot believe these are finished in one go. Her consistency is remarkable & I’d guess it took years of refinement to discover.
This was exquisite, Janet. You captured the essence of Lynette Yiadom-Boakye’s work with such reverence and clarity. I especially loved the observation that her figures feel “third culture-like and untethered”—what a perfect articulation of that in-between-ness. Your reflections on consistency, restraint, and mastery felt like a soft permission slip to stop over-editing and start trusting the first strokes more. Also, I cheered at your point about keeping artists of all disciplines on Substack—yes to the renaissance energy. More of this, please.
god bless this substack, I always learn and feel so much reading your pieces and now I have another new artist to explore. also ecstatic that she's in the tate!!! I can't wait to see her work in person :')
Thank you for the reminder. I am anchor deeply in rhythm and my practices of craft. It feels so mundane and earthly. My aspiration fit the spring is to gather community.
Such a great read - thank you for this reprieve and this call again to art of all sorts, words and visuals. We need them all now more than ever. <3

That surprised me too. And these are large bodies of works to do in one go.
