Thank you for the trip through her home… I feel quite excited and inspired to paint! Looking forward to the other visits. And your painting is lovely and very lush, I enjoy a loose playfulness as well.
Janet I absolutely resonate with your feeling of sticking out. As an woman of Indian origin I too have felt this ‘otherness’ when in some parts of Europe. But unlike you I have yet to claim my ‘right’ to be where I am and stand firm. Your paintings of your home in Ghana look lovey and thank you for taking us around Vanessa’s home. Apparently Virginia insisted to her publishers that her sister design the artwork for the covers of her books.
Thank you Ivana...I have loved reading this piece. I'm so glad you loved Lewes...I live 20 minutes away and love it too! I also really enjoyed your wonderful description of Charleston. I have yet to visit because it's (understandably, I suppose) not dog friendly and I rarely enjoy a day out without my dear companion! We did however, visit Virginia Woolf's home which I found similarly inspiring: to paint, curate beautiful things for my home, to learn more about the fascinating Bloomsbury Set, and to nurture our cottage garden. I only recently went on my first half day painting course, not far from Lewes, and was amazed at how mindful it was..and quite pleased with my result! Being an outdoor person, I have neglected my Substack since May, but you have inspired me to write again. Thank you 💕
Thank you for reading and sharing Nicola. You are so lucky to live in that area, I found it to be so peaceful and down to earth. I was told about Woolf’s home and really wanted to go but heard it was a bit far from Lewes. Definitely on my list the next time I’m in the area. Looking forward to your writing!
“But in those moments, I remind myself that I belong wherever my curiosity takes me.” I’m currently traveling in Italy and I feel the same. So excited to have learned about Vanessa today! I was not familiar with her at all. A gem. Thank you Janet!
I have a copy of A Writer's Diary. I was not aware of the cover designer, but now I am. Thank you. And if the opportunity presents itself, maybe someday a visit to her home. Wonderful!

Thank you Melanie. It’s always a good feeling when one feels a bit of thrill to paint.

I hope you enjoy Italy. I had a good experience solo traveling there a few years back. Thank you for reading
